LivenARCH IX-2025: PRIORITIES IN / OF ARCHITECTURE

25-27 September 2025, Trabzon/Türkiye

“When everything is a priority, nothing is a priority”, Karen Martin.

Priority is an expression indicating the ontological, epistemological or logical state of being coming before something else temporally; the old one in the order of time, the one that comes from behind; the first or behind in terms of knowledge or classification order, sequence of reasons or privilege [1].

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a psychological theory that categorizes human needs according to priorities. It's often depicted as a pyramid with different levels such as; “physiological”, “safety”, “social belonging”, “esteem” and “self-actualization” needs, where lower levels must be satisfied before higher levels can be addressed from the foundational to the more aspirational. Maslow's hierarchical pyramid has been influential not only in psychology but also in fields of education, management, marketing and also architecture where understanding human needs and priorities are crucial for creating livable environments.

When considering the priorities of architecture, several key aspects such as; “functionality”, “aesthetics”, “sustainability”, “durability and safety”, “cost-effectiveness”, “adaptability”, “cultural and social context”, “technological integration”, “accessibility”, “innovation and creativity” come into play parallel to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. These priorities can vary based on the specific project, client needs, and cultural context, but the fundamental aspects generally guide architectural decision-makings towards creating spaces that are functional, beautiful, sustainable, and meaningful due to the social, political, cultural, economic and technological changes and/or development.

In this context, “LivenARCH IX-2025 International Congress: PRIORITIES IN/OF ARCHITECTURE” opens a discussion on what architecture has prioritized in the past and for the future, through the interfaces of theory-practice, local-global, physical-virtual, unique-general, designer-client, etc., over the concept of “priority”.

All discussions in the content of “LivenARCH IX-2025 International Congress: PRIORITIES IN/OF ARCHITECTURE” should aim to answer the following questions:

Does architecture have priorities?

     * If architecture has priorities, what are they, and what are the reasons for them being priorities?

     * If architecture has priorities, which priorities does the discussion focus on?

Does architecture not have priorities?

     * If architecture does not have priorities, what are the reasons for their absence?

     * How does the discussion prove the absence of priorities in architecture?
